I want to help people help people.

helpingpeeps

If you feel that call to help people then you are “one of the helper-people”.

Life coaches, artists, healers, therapists, teachers. ?We have that passion to make a difference.

It’s a really beautiful thing.

It’s also a really stressful thing because figuring out how to help is tricky.

The big questions usually are:

  • How do I help? ?How much training do I need? Am I ready/good enough?
  • How do?I help others without depleting myself?
  • Can I really make a living helping others? ?Really? How?

And?these questions have?dozens of other questions living inside of them.

For those of us who are called to help, figuring out how to do it successfully?is some of the most difficult and rewarding work we ever do.

I have been helping people make their dreams real, as my full time job, for just over five years.

And I was doing it on the side while working in an office job for about 5 years before that (back when I used to believe that it would be impossible for me to make a good living doing this work).

And for ten?years before that I dreamed of helping people without having any clue how to do it. ?All I knew is that I wanted to help make this world a better place, somehow, using my creativity.

Helping people is something I have always been called to do.

But the call didn’t come with instructions.

So I spent a lot of time stumbling around trying to figure stuff out,?which was frustrating and painful and awful.

Which is why I started doing?”helper-people group coaching” to help others navigate this path.

For the last two years I’ve run this as a small coaching groups. ?In these groups I have helped people to:

  • Figure out how to start their helping business
  • Create marketing plans that feel good and inspiring?to implement
  • Narrow down their ideas and figure out where, exactly, to focus
  • Start blogging + vlogging (video blogging)
  • Find ways to factor self-care into their work day
  • Work on boundaries with clients?and customers
  • Find the courage to raise their prices
  • Decide if self employment is really for them or if there is a different way for them to help

This year I want to make it more accessible so I’m doing it as a bigger thing, free and open to everyone who is a member of the Creative?Dream Circle.

This February we’ll do a four special coaching calls for healers/coaches/artists/helpers to dive into the work of growing your work.

You’ll start with a specific intention for what you want to do/learn/figure out/manifest during the month and, together, we’ll dig in and make it happen.

I’m not going to promise that I can make the path easy or anything like that (I think it’s hard for a reason – we’ll get into that on these calls).

But I can help shine a light on the hard parts and help you navigate them with more ease and grace.

I can offer guidance, encouragement and?ridiculous amounts of inspiration and motivation to take some big steps towards your dream this February.

We’ll focus on two areas: helping you get better at helping people (grow your self/skills) and helping you help more people (grow your work/business).

Again – helping the helper-people group coaching is going to be free for all Creative Dream Circle members. ?So if you want to get in on these calls just join the Circle.

If you’re unsure about spending the money – then the first thing you’ll focus on in the coaching calls is to find a way to double your investment – it will cost $147 to join so we’ll find a way for you to make a quick $294 helping other people.

(Also the next thing we’re doing in the Creative Dream Circle this year is my Creative? With Money class – so if you join I’ll definitely be able to help you work through money blocks!)

The calls will happen?February 8, 15, 22, 19 (Mondays at 11am Central).

All calls will be recorded. ?If you can’t be on the calls live you can email me your questions and listen to my answers on the recording and participate?in the online forum.

If you’ve got any questions about how this can help YOU, just send me an email using the contact form on this page.

Looking forward to this!

I want to help people help people. Read More »

Are you afraid to put yourself “out there”?

On Monday I launched the Year Of Dreams Epic Playbool for Healing, Magic + Dreams Come True.

Playing with this week's coloring + journaling pages for The Year Of Dreams Epic Playbook. #happy #coloring #journaling http://bit.ly/YearOfDreams

In the past, every time?I would put something new out there I would be super crazy nervous.

In fact, I would spend much of the day actually bracing myself for bad reactions. ?“This is stupid” “Who do you think you are, anyway?”?

Which makes sense!

Putting a dream out into the world is vulnerable and tender and scary. ?It’s like putting your heart out into the world…?what if the world doesn’t want it?

It’s terrifying.

But?now… now?I actually enjoy putting my ideas out there.

On Monday I flung?my Year of Dreams Epic Playbook out into the world, feeling fulfilled and happy and excited to be doing it.

Then I spent the day just being happy about it.

I got here by being there.

Each time I put something out there, and worked through my fears and doubts, that made it easier to do it again the next time.

I’m not saying to throw your dreams out into the world before they are ready. ?I mean if you want to be a life coach then get life coach training first. ?Coach people for free until you feel sure of your skills. ?Then put an offer out there and let people know it’s your first offer.

Don’t pretend to be an expert when you’re a beginner.

But?don’t let being a beginner stop you from beginning.

Every time I have an idea, and then carry it through to completion and put it out into the world I grow towards my bigness?which is just a really delicious thing.

I wanted to share that with you, in case you’re feeling unsure about putting your dreams out there.

You?don’t have to feel ready or brave or sure or anything like that. ?You just have to be willing to try – to take the step that’s in front of you to take.

When I put on my first creativity workshop I was absolutely positive that this work would never be able to generate enough income to support me. ?Absolutely positive.

I was just happy to do the workshops, that people would come and play with me.

My big dream at that time was to work down to 3 days a week at my office job so I could?have more time to explore this work.

And now I just celebrated my five year anniversary of leaving that job. ?My creativity workshops most definitely do make enough money to support me – it just didn’t happen in the way I envisioned it back then.

Taking steps towards what I wanted changed my perspective, opened up new possibilities and led me to live a bigger dream than I could imagine for myself back then.

It’s really magic how that works. ?One step at a time.

PS: If you want some help working through the fear of not being good enough or not being able to find the time or space to work on your dreams or simply not knowing how to start – I would love to help!

I filled the Creative Dream Circle with everything you need to navigate the inner and outer work of bringing dreams to life as a way of growing into who you really are.

PPS: In February I’m going to be doing a series of group coaching calls for people who want to put their ideas out into the world – healers, coaches, artists, teachers, etc. ?These calls will be free for all Creative Dream Circle members – I’ll have more details?to share about that soon.

Wheeee! Year of Dreams! Let’s Do This!

Year of Dreams Epic Playbook
The Year of Dreams Epic Playbook: Guided Journal + Coloring Book for Magic, Healing + Dreams Come True starts today and lasts all year.

I created this book for 2 reasons:

  • Coloring + journaling are my favourite and I want to share the magic
  • I wanted to make something special for people who have a hard time staying on the path

It’s simple. ?You can make your dream real if you stay on the path long enough.

But it’s really freaking hard to stay on the path.

Nevermind that you’ve got a lot of things demanding your time and attention and it’s just hard to make time for your dream on a purely practical level.

Growing a dream means growing your SELF. ?It means facing those voices that say: “Who are you to think you can do this anyway?” “If you try and fail it will be the end of the world” “You’re not good enough”.

Some days it feels impossibly hard to face that fear and shame and uncertainty and to bring healing to those dark places – which is the real work of making any dream real.

The Year of Dreams playbook makes this easier in 2 ways:

  • The pages will just keep coming all year. ?If you get off track that’s fine – it’s crazy easy to get back on. Just open the email next Monday, print out the pages and play your way back into alignment with your dream.
  • Each page is a secret shortcut to your magic – your creativity, intuition and inner power. ? They are very carefully designed to help you with the inner work that needs to happen to make your dream real in the outer world.??(When you’ve got the inner work successfully handled the outer work is a breeze)

Click here to read more and to join the adventure.

I’m cheering for you.

2015 (AKA Best Year Ever) Year In Review.

January 1, 2016 marks my five year anniversary of quitting my last job to live my dreams full time.

Five years!

This year I’ve been having a really hard time sitting down to write this “goodbye 2015 hello 2016” post – because I am just feeling so much about this.

Five years!

I’ve built this dream into a stable and steady business that supports me in living how I want to live – in every sense of that. I mean having a meaningful and fulfilling and creative and expansive and deeply connected to myself with all the play and self-care I need kind of life. And also of course making enough money to make that happen.

(I do want to share more – a lot more – about this and I want to help you to create the same thing for yourself, so I will be doing a series of group coaching calls for coaches/artists/healers/teachers in February – this will be free for all Creative Dream Circle members?and only available?for Circle members.? More details?to come this month)

I feel proud and humbled and happy and grateful and when I think about where I am now my heart starts to sparkle. It’s almost too much, which is why I’ve been having a hard time sitting down and doing this.

But here I am.

It’s January 1, I’m sitting on my yellow sofa in the dream loft drinking an eggnog latte. It’s crazy sunny. I was up way too late playing with my friends and family and in a few hours I’m heading out of town with them to go play some more.

For these few hours when I’m alone I want to look back and look forward and savour it all.
Exploring Quality Time. What it is, how to create it, what it means for me and my dreams. http://bit.ly/yearofdreams

I’m going to use my Creative Journal Prompts for the New Year?to lead?me though this.

Goodbye 2015. Looking back:

What was amazing in 2015?

Oh my gosh!

Earlier this week in my Inner Work 101 post I wrote about how the purpose of inner work is not too obliterate fear or try to get to a place where you never have shitty days. The purpose is simply to get better at tending to our tenderest selves. Practicin
Grow Your Depth, Nurture Your Brilliance – my year-long advanced practice class on journaling. Because I was doing this class as my way of leading it I feel like all the other amazing things that happened spring from this work of digging in deeper and shining out brighter.?(This program is still available in the?Creative Dream Circle)

I released my first deck of Journaling Cards.
Today's #journaling card: What do you secretly wish for? http://bit.ly/journalcards

I stopped taking new coaching clients. ?I’ve always felt this tug between loving that kind of in-depth work and loving having a schedule that is not all “booked up”. ?I have enough regular clients now that it feels like I’ve struck the perfect balance. ?It feels really good to know what a “full” coaching practice means to me, and to have it.

I grew the Creative Dream Circle to the point where it feels stable. ?People come and go but?the overall number of members rises steadily. ?In the past there were more peaks and valleys as getting to stability does take time/work?(some of you may remember that I have been working at this for a few years – looking back from “being here” I can see that the slow grow is really a much better way both for me and the Circle. ?I still don’t want a huge influx all at once).

After being really happily single for a long time, I fell in love and began the process of building a relationship that is more nurturing, supportive and expansive than I knew was possible.
Grateful for a partner who likes to go for walks no matter how cold it gets.

We’re having lots of amazing adventures together including a canoe trip where we got to sleep under the dancing Northern Lights.

Epic weekend. Canoe trip was amazing and we even got to sleep in a screen tent under the dancing northern lights.

2015 was my first year being opening “out” as a grey haired lady. ?I did start growing out my roots in 2014 and then right at the end of 2014 I got a crazy-short haircut to get rid of all dyed hair so I started 2015 with my natural color. ?I am so disappointed in the messages society gives women about aging and?in how many women buy into those ridiculous stories?about there being something wrong with your body looking exactly the way it looks. ?I get A LOT of comments on my hair, all the time – even strangers tell me I should dye it – which just shows how important it is to have women out there with their natural hair, not giving a shit and also not being willing to marinate my precious head in chemicals every 6 weeks.

My mandalas were published in a coloring book!

I started skating after a 20+ year hiatus which completely transformed my experience of winter as I developed?a new habit – sunset skating on the river.

What did you do in 2015 that you?re proud of?

Well that repeats from a lot of the above – I’m proud of the life I’ve built for myself. ?But more importantly I’m proud of who I have grown into.

Today in Grow Your Depth, Nurture Your Brilliance: Early morning tea + journaling. http://bit.ly/growyourdepth
What did you learn/discover that you want to bring into 2016?

The real and tangible magic of holding the intention to deepen my practice and how that changes things without working with specific?intentions for what I want… letting that come from a wiser part of me.

Saturday morning in my creative #journal. Sinking into the last 3 months of Grow Your Depth, Nurture Your Brilliance and wildly grateful for the last 9 months of this practice. http://bit.ly/growyourdepth
What do you want to leave behind in 2015?

This thing I just noticed about myself where I tend to contract when I am afraid. I’d like to expand in the face of fear. My intuition says that this would be safer. It feels scary but I want to try.

Journal bed picnic.
What are you most grateful for about 2015?

The way it all came together. I worked hard to grow into the person I wanted to be and this year felt like less work and more enjoying already being there.

How did your dreams grow in 2015?

Magnificently. There are more creative projects I wanted to take on than I did, but that’s just normal for a creative mind – there is always more to be inspired about!

What did you do to help your dreams grow in 2015? What worked? What didn?t work?

That deep and solid container of daily practice. Meeting my feelings, doing energy work and journaling with my creativity and intuition. This always works.

This year I didn’t do the stuff that doesn’t work, I feel like I weeded that out really well in 2014 plus with Grow Your Depth, Nurture Your Brilliance lighting my path I stayed focused in the right direction.

This afternoon in Grow Your Depth, Nurture Your Brilliance: What's Important? Creativity. Trust. Peace. Calm. Love. Nurturing the things that matter. Aligning with what I want. Doing the things that bring me joy. Good list! http://bit.ly/growyourdepth

How did YOU grow in 2015? What gifts and strengths do you have now that you didn?t have in 2013?

I feel like I grew beautifully. I’ve been growing creatively and spiritually for many many years, what was new this year was growing in partnership. I grew my capacity for vulnerability and deep emotional honesty and feeling really truly loved.

Is there anything you need to do to complete your year? Any unfinished business that you?d like to finish, and leave behind as you move into 2016?

I just got a bill for property taxes for the last 2 years on the dream loft. Since the loft is a new building it took the city some time to set up each loft as a new property. I knew this was coming and had put money aside for it so it didn’t feel like a big deal.

But as I sat with this question I saw how paying the bill, symbolically does show a movement forward. Being settled here in my new life and everything that buying the dream loft represented for me: freedom and being true to myself as a creative person and living life on my terms and not settling.

Creating chaos. Re-arranging all the furniture in the Dream Loft. I love doing this whenever things change in my life. This re-structuring is happening in celebration of the Year of Dreams Epic Playbook. So excited about my work right now. http://bit.ly/Y

So, yeah I will think of that when I pay this bill this week and savour the beauty of being settled in my new life.

Hello 2016! Looking forward:

List 5-10 things you?d like to have happen in 2015, in each of these different parts of your life:

health

to keep enjoying: biking, long walks, skating, to keep getting better at cooking healthy foods and having them ready in advance, to discover more breakfast options, more yin yoga

relationships

explore the magics of intimacy and vulnerability, keep working with this book, more snuggling, practice being more open hearted with everyone, make more effort to get together with people,

creativity

daily drawing practice, to make lists of things I want to draw and work through them, sew some great fall and spring coats, sew a beautiful kimono, find more?creative projects I can do with my sweetie’s kids

purpose/career

keeping finding new ways to love what I do, practice aligning deeper with purpose and letting inspiration come from there, trusting other people to help support my growing business, creating another deck of cards, creating that other idea that I’m not ready to share, and that other other idea

money

I am so proud of how much money I saved in 2015 I don’t know how to expand on that, I do want to grow my income by 20% in preparation for some life changes in the next few years

self-love/self-care

fill two of these, breathe deeper more often (think of ways to create reminders to do this), drink more water (boring but this is what’s coming to me), keep exploring how boundaries are working in my life and where I may want them to change,?replace Netflix with?more nurturing forms of downtime, make more of my own personal care?stuff (like body lotions, hair stuff, deodorant, bubble bath) with my favourite essential oils

#creativeemergence Day 19: What's been bothering me lately is that through Creative Emergence I've become more clear on where I want things to change. Simple course correction. But I got caught up in the sadness of noticing that my dream is not yet here.

spirituality

daily meditation while experimenting with ways of tracking daily meditation in my journal, daily energy clearing and alchemy practices, ask for help more often, when I don’t feel that inner alignment – STOP (no matter what I’m doing) – and get back into alignment before going on with my day, be more consistent in my yoga practice

happiness

well when I am doing all of these things I am happy! It doesn’t feel like more is needed here so I’ll share a photo of a groundhog eating my cupcake from a picnic last summer.

Groundhog eating a cupcake.
adventure/play

Quick stop at the beach on the way to our retreat - celebrating my mom's 70th birthday with my family.
more beach days this summer (have already planned this with my sweetie), trip to Mexico, more picnics though it will be hard because I had a lot of picnics in 2015 but I want more still, drive out to the country to watch shooting starts/northern lights when they’re happening, be open to finding new ways to play that I like

(I’m going to skip some of the prompts about my dream because this is stuff I’m already writing about every week in the Sharing Circles in the Creative Dream Circle and holy moly this is long already.)

What?s your plan for giving your dreams what they needs to thrive in 2016? Brainstorm 10 things you can try.

  • deep alignment and letting all action come from that
  • walk my talk and share my story as I do (which is the only form of “marketing” I want to do for my work in 2016)
  • stay committed to daily practice
  • listen to my intuition and and act on it
  • remember that every obstacle is a gift
  • be more proactive about looking for miracles
  • diligent planning and making space for all the things I want to create
  • oh actually make more space for planning like every Monday morning ALL morning (not planning and to-doing but being in deep internal connection to the essence of my dream so plans come from that connection)

Hello Monday! Creative Genius Planning Session in process. Calling in Structure, Freedom + Infinite Possibilities for the week ahead. (Creative Genius Planning Kit is in the Creative Dream Circle: http://bit.ly/growyourdepth )

What do you want to STOP doing in 2016? And what are some things you can you do to make that as easy as possible?

Over the course of 2014 I stopped doing the things I didn’t want to be doing in my business. At this point I feel pretty grounded in not doing those things anymore.

I’d like to stop hesitating to tell the truth about how I feel, I’d like to stop interacting with anyone who makes me feel like I need to prove myself. Daily practice supports me in doing these things – it makes self-betrayal sting a little more.

Then imagine yourself at the end of 2016 (You might want to draw/collage/doodle an image of you from one year from now). How are you different? How did you grow? What new strengths and skills do you have? Does you-from-one-year-from-today have any messages or advice for you?

Me from one year from now is more grounded in her self. More confident, in a quieter way. Her clothes are nicer – all silky and gorgeous.

She says: radiate stillness.
upload

I get it. That is the perfect guiding light for 2016. ?Which is funny because I didn’t set out to find a guiding light for 2016 but here it is.

Radiate Stillness.

Year of Dreams Free Coloring + Journaling Pages (day 5 of 5)

My big project for 2016 is The Year of Dreams Epic Playbook: Guided Journal + Coloring Book for Healing, Magic + Dreams Come True.

The playbook is?designed to?shift your energy and?spark new insights and self-realizations to help you grow into your biggest, brightest and dreamiest self… and to make it fun and inspiring?to keep at it so you can?take your creative dreaming and personal growth skills to the next level.

I’m so happy and grateful about this – to spend the year building the ultimate guided journal and coloring book for creating deep and lasting change is my ultimate dream job.

I’m celebrating by giving away a page a day all week!

Since?December 28 ?I’ve been posting a new page here every day. ?Here’s today’s page:

Free guided journal and coloring pages

Click here to download the full resolution page – if you just save the image above you’ll get a too-small version.

Today’s page is more journaling prompts to help you wrap up your experience with these pages over this past week and forge ahead on your path.

As always, there is stuff to color to give you more time to soak up the questions.

A special note about your intution.

The last prompt on this page asks “What does your intuition say?” ?Well of course, you may not know.

The truth is, we are all intuitive. ?Intuitive is simply a matter of being connected to inner wisdom.

It’s something we all have, but how much you’re going to be able to hear and understand your intuitive voice will mostly depend on how much attention you pay to it.

When you work on cultivating your inner relationship with your intuition, your intuitive voice becomes louder and more clear. ?(Of course this is something all of the classes and tools in the Creative Dream Circle help with)

So, for now – just sit with the question.

What does your intuition think about the next steps you’re planning to take?

Pay attention to how the question feels inside your body.

Pay attention to the thoughts that come to you as you sit with it.

Give it time, something that “feels right” will come to you.

Your intuition is your most reliable source of information for how to make your?dream real.

Your dream is connected to your purpose, your spirit and your authenticity. ?Bringing it to life helps being you towards more of who you really are.

Following other people’s advice tends to take you away from who you really are.

See, if your dream is to open?up your own yoga retreat center and you find someone else who has already done this and then use their steps to build your dream – it will not actually be your dream.

It may be beautiful and amazing on the outside but on the inside it won’t feel like your dream because you didn’t make it your way.

Because you’re a creative genius, not a copycat.

It’s good to look at what other people have done and learn from them – and then create your own unique way of doing it by following your unique creative heart.

That way you build YOUR yoga retreat center, not someone else’s.

?(This is why intuitive development is an important part of dream-building)

You have unique gifts to share.

Your intuition, and your intuition alone, knows the best ways for you to share them.

So, sit with it?this question today to see how your intuition?can help you map out your next steps.

If you want to share a pic of your colored page on Instagram use the #yearofdreams hashtag so we can find you!

This is the last of the free pages I’m sharing from The Year of Dreams Epic Playbook: Guided Journal + Coloring Book for Healing, Magic + Dreams Come True.

I hope you’ll join me for the full Year of Dreams in 2016 which starts on January 4.

Every week in 2016 you?ll get THREE new heartfelt hand-drawn pages that make it easy and fun to stay with the process so you can take your creative dreaming and personal growth skills to the next level.

It’s designed to have enough new stuff coming at you to be inspiring and helpful and not so much stuff that it gets overwhelming.

This is the ultimate BFF for your dream – to cheer it on, help it grow and pick it back up when it falls down.

You can work through your playbook in 5-10 minute increments and changes will start to seep into your life. Or you can dive in and delight in the magic of it for hours and hours – your choice.

And if you?re ever too busy to play you can just ignore the emails until you?re ready to dive back in, knowing that more magic is always on its way to you.

More magic is always on its way to you!

The Year of Dreams?Epic Playbook: Guided Journal + Coloring Book for Healing, Magic + Dreams Come True?is only available inside the Creative Dream Circle.

As you may have guessed, it does take a bit more than a coloring book to make REAL magic in your life.

Today’s page is a series of journal prompts about your dream. ?The purpose of these kinds of pages is simply to connect with your dream in different ways, to work on your inner relationship with your dream.

It’s that inner relationship with your dream that helps you build?the path to it in the outer world, so even though this work is invisible it’s a vital part of being able to create your dream as a real life thing out in the world.

Your dream lives inside of you.

It’s your purpose and spirit and authenticity and creativity all wrapped up together and ready to become an expression of you, out in the world.

In my free e-course Give Your Dream Wings I teach a process for connecting with your dream in this way. ?Use that process to connect with your dream, then have this conversation with it in your journal.

There are lots of small things to color, to spend more time in that energy of connection with your dream.

I find when I spend more time with it – doodling or coloring -?that’s when the really cool and amazing ideas start to come to me.

Today’s page is an energy alchemy process. ?If this is new to you, I teach how this works in my free e-course Give Your Dream Wings.

It’s about tapping into your intuition and inner power to change your outer world – through creativity and imagination.

Energy alchemy processes shift your energy – sometimes dramatically,?usually?in more subtle ways. ?But when you keep doing these over time you?can significantly change anything you want to change in your life.

Inside the Creative?Dream Circle I have classes that?lead you through in-depth transformative energy alchemy processes so you can better understand how it works.

To do?this page trust your imagination, just go with it and see what happens for you.

Color in the leaves/feathers around the container (you can read more about what energy containers are and how they work here) and imagine?that as you do this you are filling this container with the quality of love.

When the container feels full of love, imagine putting your dream inside it. ?Then draw or describe your dream inside the container to symbolize your dream inside this container of love.

Sit with it, imagining what happens as your dream soaks up the love.

Trust your imagination even if this gets really weird or feels totally fake.

Journal about what happens.

Then pay attention to your thoughts for the rest of the day – new ideas about your dream may come to you.

The playbook pages combine insightful journaling prompts and?energy alchemy exercises?with fun stuff to color and?space for your doodles and journaling.

Today’s page is a mandala with a message for you.

Sometimes the messages will feel comforting, reassuring or inspiring. ?Sometimes they’ll piss you off or trigger your fears and insecurities.

Whatever happens is perfect.

The aim is to be with your actual experience with the mandala, not to try to have “the perfect happy and inspiring mandala experience”.

Being with your actual experience will lead you to new discoveries and insights about what it is you really need right now to claim your inherent worthiness.

As you color the mandala imagine your colors activate its magic.

Pay attention to how this feels. ?Pay attention to the thoughts, ideas and questions that come up in response.

There is lot of white space on this page to journal about your reaction?to the mandala.

Keep going – especially if you absolutely hate the mandala – coloring and journaling and expressing your feelings.

Do?your best to trust that however this unfolds for you, this is leading you to exactly what you need right now.

Meeting with the cranky fairy of holiday resentment.

crankyfairy

I’ve been really snippy lately – just?quick?to get frustrated when things don’t go right.

The holidays are a stressful time.

Most years I take great effort to avoid this and to create a really peaceful and happy end of the year – but?this year I just walked right into the madness of the holidays.

(Last year I even did a whole class on having a happy, calm and peaceful holiday season, which is now in the Creative Dream Circle?- at the beginning of the month I reminded the Circle members that it’s there if they need it but I didn’t think I needed it. ?Ha.)

I just walked downtown in the snow before sunrise – one of my treasured winter rituals which usually makes me feel so peaceful and happy.

But this morning I spent the whole walk following my negative thoughts around in sad, angry circles.

And then when I got to the coffee shop to work of course I couldn’t. ?I mean I can’t do the work I do from?that kind of headspace.

So I am asking my cranky feeling to meet with me and see if we can work this out.

Cranky feeling appears as a blue haired fairy. ?Her fairy wand is bent… actually when I look closer, she looks like she’s been on a bender.

Hey fairy, how are you doing?

How am I doing? How can anyone be expected to think with that horrible banging? ?What is that?

That’s the music in the coffee shop.

It’s terrible.

Well, yeah, but I’m sure the next song with be less bangy.

Let’s never come here again the sound system is wrong for my ears.

OK, I agree. ?But since we’re here now I’d like to be able to just get to work.

Hmrph.

What else is bothering you?

Well everything is changing and I’m so scared. ?

The fairy bursts into tears.

Oh, I’m so sorry you’re feeling scared. ?How can I help?

[Fairy asks for something that I don’t want to share online]

Well, my intuition says yes.

But I say no!

Hmmm, can you remember some other times when my intuition said yes and you said no? ?Like when I bought the loft? ?You were terrified, remember?

Yeah….

And that worked out really well, right?

Well…

And then this bright light eclipses everything.

My heart softens.

I remember that I can trust my inner truth.

I look around for the fairy, she’s teeny tiny now, sitting?on the armrest of the chair. ?I pick her up and put her in the palm of my hand.

I want you to feel safe – more safe, more of the time. ?How can I do that?

I want you to be more aware of how much things are changing! You’re just?carrying on like you’re fine! ?

Well I guess I thought I was fine.

I want you to be more present with the change, so I can be fine too.

Oh, ok I see that. ?I’m sorry I haven’t been doing that for you. ?I love you, you know. ?I want to take care of you. I don’t want you to feel afraid.

Fairy sparkles for a few minutes, then flies into my heart.

Here’s what I got?from this:

Well, first – a healing. ?My heart is soft and sparkly and I’m not all cranky anymore.

But more importantly?I got a reminder that that small, scared parts of me are small and scared.

Small as in easy for me to not notice.

Scared as in really afraid of things that I think are “not a big deal”.

This is one of the ways that stuff like PMS is actually a gift – it makes those small things bigger and sharper and unavoidable.

We think we’re being crazy, getting so upset about something so insignificant.

But we’re not crazy.

The world we live in is crazy.

We do our best to cope and carry on like everything is fine, but?these?tender, vulnerable parts of us always remember that what’s happening out there in the world?is completely crazy.

And we need to tend to these tender, vulnerable parts of us so that they don’t get hard, so that we don’t get hard.

Because when we’re hard we disconnect from our inner gifts.

And when we’re disconnected from our gifts the whole world changes.

It gets harder and meaner. ?And we get harder and meaner in response. ?Or we get sad. ?Or we just shut down and get really quiet and small.

And suffice it to say, that path that doesn’t lead to your dream.

So as uncomfortable as it it so make space for the discomfort – what else are you going to do?

And for?Creative Dream Circle members: remember you can take your holiday crankies into the Un-Sticking Station so you can transform them into helpful gifts.

PS: Come back next?week – I’ll have free journaling + coloring pages for you to download.

Inner Work 101: How To Handle Fear, Self-Doubt + Uncertainty

Inner Work 101 is a series of in-depth blog posts I?m working on to de-mystify the inner workings of inner work. ?I?m tired of seeing brilliant creative people stumble around and settle for less than they really want because they don?t know how to navigate the path of their own potential and this is what I?m doing to help change that. ?Find all the Inner Work 101 posts right here.

How To Handle Fear, Self-Doubt + Uncertainty

This is the main thing people ask me about, which ?makes sense because it’s?the main that that holds people back from going after their dreams.

And the answer is always the last thing that anyone wants to hear: the only way out is through.

When you avoid feeling the terror of your fear or the pain of your self-doubt then you avoid moving through it.

Which ?means you avoid moving forward. ?You avoid your dream.

Most of the time, people are looking for a way AROUND?it, not through it.

So they’re asking: how do I stop feeling afraid? How do I avoid my self-doubt?

But the only way to get there is to be with the pain.

On why you have to deal with your shit before you can have your dream:

People hit a point on the path to their dream where they feel fear or pain or doubt and they think something is wrong. ?That they made a mistake or this doesn’t really work or something because?it’s all supposed to feel good, right?

Wrong.

It’s supposed to feel exactly how it feels.

And when you ignore/avoid/stuff your feelings you hold them where they are. ?You freeze them inside you and you keep freezing them inside you until they turn to stone.

Those stones turn into walls?that force you to live inside their?boundaries.

Living inside their boundaries keeps you from having to feel the feeling you don’t want to feel – because you’re numb to it.

But living inside their boundaries also keeps you from expanding your creativity and potential. ?It keeps you from hearing your inner wisdom. ?It keeps you from your dreams.

It keeps you numb and stuck.

Most of the time, you’re doing this in totally unconscious ways.

I know I spent many years convinced that it wasn’t me.

I didn’t have my dream because it’s hard out there and people don’t support artists the way they should and I didn’t have enough money?or time and that I was doing?the best I could it just wasn’t possible for me to have what I really wanted.

As long as I was in those excuses of course there was no way for me to create the path that led to the life I wanted to be living, the one I live now.

I was working with a client who has been through a lot of shit in her life.

As we started working together to build a path that led to a more optimistic, expansive, creative and joyful way of living, we started to clear the shit that was in the way – the old wounds full of pain and grief and hurt.

First, I asked her to sit with her pain. ?To write about it and make art about it and just sit quietly with it.

This was to help to untangle the energy patterns that kept her from facing all of these hard feelings, so that we could re-wire those energy patterns to aim her towards her goal.

Of course we’d all rather skip this part but this is the first step, being with the pain.

So I asked her to sit with the pain and really tend to it as best she could. ?And you know what happened? ?She kept discovering new layers and levels of pain.

It was awful.

It’s like little trap doors kept opening up and leading to new rooms of hurt feelings and grief and sadness and broken dreams.

But my intuition has never been wrong when it comes to this kind of work and my intuition kept urging me to keep urging her to stay the path. ?And so she went deeper and deeper into her grief and pain.

And you know what?

It took time, but as she kept doing her best to tend to the pain she started to heal.

The ground softened beneath her.

The sun started to shine. ?Dimly at?first and then brighter later.

She got really good at tending to her pain.

Not obliterating it or avoiding it or throwing it someone else or making sure she never feels it again. ?Tending to it. ?Taking care of it without letting it take over.

And over the course of this process her inner landscape shifted.

The ground is softer the sun shines brighter and possibilities abound.

When pain comes in it doesn’t take over. ?There is space?for pain. ?There is space for love. ?There is space for creativity and magic.

Possibilities bloom. ?There is space for dreams now that wasn’t there before.

Not to be a downer or anything but you’ll probably never?stop experiencing fear, self-doubt or uncertainty.

That’s not the goal of inner work.

The goal is to stop letting that stuff stop you from being who you want to be and doing what you want to do.

To get better at allowing your actual feelings and being with your actual experience.

This allows you to inhabit your inner world more deeply.

When this happens you’re also connected to all the good stuff in there: your inner gifts and intuition and power. ?The stuff that brings dreams to life.

Feeling like it would take a miracle? You’re in luck 🙂

Project Miracle is for people who believe in the magic of their dreams and are ready for something to change.

Balance is Bullshit. Real Self-Care Strategies for Highly Sensitive People with Big Dreams.

balance is bullshit
Creating balance can feel like an impossible dream, or a never-ending task, because it is both of those things.

Balance has a crappy energy to it.

Ugh. I've just spent all day writing and re-writing this part. It keeps coming out way too crabby.

The truth is, I am anti-balance.

The only times in my life when I have been "super balanced" are the times when I was playing small, denying my real dreams and settling for less than what I actually wanted.

Sure I was balanced but no it wasn't worth it.

Life is messy. Dreams are messy. You're not always going to feel balanced and on top of everything. That's ok.

The truth is, a lot of growth happens in those messy un-balanced places.

So, if you can let go of wanting balance all the time - that's really helpful.

On the other hand, always feeling like things are out of control and like you can't balance it all is not healthy and won't nurture you or your dreams.

So, you need to be balanced in your need for balance.

Sometimes you'll have it, sometimes you won't.

Balance is precarious.

The energy of the word balance always makes me think of balancing on a balance beam. It feels awesome when you get it right but the threat of falling is always right there.

What is it that you want, when you say you want to be more balanced?

Take that question into your journal and really explore it.

For me, I want stability. The quality of stability feels grounding and helpful and safe for me. I want to feel stable in my life and in my dreams.

So I work with stability, not balance. For you it may be a different quality. Once you know that, then ask yourself:

What is it that you need, in order to feel balanced/stable/whatever quality you come up with?

Spend a lot of time with it in your journal. Go deep with this. Write out everything that comes to mind, even if it's super impossible.

For me, it's actually really simple.

I need to be organised for life to feel stable. In fact being super organised helps me be more present and free and creative - not just more balanced and stable.

Rushing to meet deadlines destroys my sense of stability so I don't do it. I plan everything out so that I'm working on things wayyyy in advance of actually needing them to be done and keep lots of empty space in my schedule.

This gives me a lot of freedom to handle unexpected things that come up.

And it gives me the space to be actually present with myself and my actual needs in the moment - I don't have to put that aside to meet a deadline.

And it means I can take full advantage of those times when my creative energy is high and I want to work a lot.

I've experimented a lot with this stuff over the years and this is what really works for me.

What actually works doesn't necessarily "look" balanced.

We all have stories about what a perfect, balanced life would look like. Those stories are mostly bullshit.

For me, having a real sense of stability means working 12 hours a day sometimes, and 2 hours a day other times.

It means having routines that change with the seasons, which includes adjustment periods at the beginning of each new season where I feel off.

There will always be trade-offs.

Part of why our culture has such a problem with balance is that we tend to want to have it all and balancing IT ALL is hard.

Stability, simplicity and spaciousness are important to me, so I keep them as my priorities.

I say no to a lot of projects and opportunities.

I say no to a lot of my own ideas, if they'll take up more energy than I feel comfortable giving them.

I don't do a lot of things I could be doing to make my business bigger.

And I am really happy with the choices I've made. It doesn't feel like settling, it feels like clarity, freedom and my perfect-fit life.

Luckily, there is a secret magic shortcut.

Creating balance is about trying to fit all the different things you want/need into your life in such a way that feels good.

Meanwhile you have all this power and magic beneath the surface.

So in a way, focusing on balance can be a bit of a trap that leaves you constantly chasing something you can never really hold onto.

But focusing on being happy and fulfilled and connected to your inner gifts makes you stronger and more capable - BIGGER.

Which means you can hold more and do more.

Some of the balance stuff that seems to hard when you're staying on the surface becomes really easy when you're working in your depths.

This has been my strategy as a highly sensitive business owner -the more I focus on nourishing self-care, the more I can do because I am more connected to my inner gifts + power.

When I focus too much on managing my time better and balancing it all then I wind up frustrated and overwhelmed because that leaves me feeling like there's too much on my plate, no matter how much is actually there.

In other words: it doesn't matter how much is on my plate, all that matters is how I feel about my plate.

Some things that are helpful for this:

1. Do the things that light you up. Every day.

Self-care practices really need to be daily practices to keep your tanks full. (This is why I share my bike rides and picnics and other adventures on my Instagram - as reminders of the delight of making self-care a daily priority)

2. Learn more about what you need.

Ask yourself "What do I need right now?" and sit with it until an answer comes. It's normal to not know what you want at first, the more you practice this the better you'll get.

3. Be honest.

It's amazing how much we lie to ourselves about how we feel. If something isn't OK for you, tell the truth. If it's too hard to tell other people at least tell yourself the truth about how you feel and what you want. Remember that your attitude creates the energy atmosphere that you live in. "I don't want this but I'm doing it because I don't know what else to do right now" is better than trying to convince yourself you're ok with doing something when really you're not.

4. Remember that your perspective is not The Truth and be willing to change it.

Like, if it makes sense to you that your self-care needs should always come last - change your perspective on that! Question your beliefs. Explore your inner world. Inner work is magic and it's amazing how much you can change your beliefs and attitudes which changes how you see the world which changes what?is possible for you.

5. Get creative about how you create your life.

If you're filling your life up with stuff you don't really want to be doing, stop it. Your dreams and your happiness are more important. You are a creative GENIUS and there is always a way to do things differently. (You may need to work on #4 in order to be able to do this)

Not that I am always super successful at this but this is my aim.

This means really diving in an exploring what's going on so I can find ways to get what I need while doing what I need to do.

So I meditate and journal and explore. I meet up with various inner critics and limiting beliefs that keep this situation all tangled up. And when I take the time to really explore all of that - I find simple perfect solutions to the things that overwhelm me.

If you're too quick to go into compromise-mode to create balance, you can lose out on finding a perfect solution.

That's why it's important to take the time to really explore what's going on in your inner world before taking action in the outer world - if you go right into action mode you are acting out of your limiting beliefs.

You are a creative GENIUS after all. And genius trumps balance every time.

There is always a way for you to create a perfect solution.

The key is to not put your energy into "creating balance", instead put your energy into creating a life that nourishes you and your dreams.

Which means being really committed to creating the life you want and taking an active role in creating it, every day - living from your genius.

Some days that will feel balanced and some days it will not.
